The kitbash problem

Giving artists 200 unique hero props sounds great until they have to dress 40 levels and everything starts looking the same or they spend days rotating the same 5 rocks.

A well-designed prop kit gives 10-20 core pieces that combine in many ways, plus a few hero uniques per biome.

The fantasy and dark fantasy prop bundles follow this philosophy: core altars, obelisks, lanterns, and statues that can be mixed and scaled.

Technical decisions that enable fast dressing

Consistent pivot and socket placement so pieces snap together without fighting.

Shared material instances with exposed parameters for colour, wear, and moss so the same mesh can read as different biomes.

Nanite on almost everything so LODs are not a concern.

Light, sensible collision presets (many props don't need per-poly collision).

Variation without explosion of assets

Use material parameter collections or texture atlases for colour and detail variation.

Provide 3-4 scale variants of key pieces instead of 20 unique models.

Include a few 'kitbash' meshes (broken versions, combined pieces) that artists can drop in for hero moments.

FAQ

How many unique props do I actually need?

For most games, a strong kit of 30-60 pieces plus 5-10 hero uniques per major biome is enough. More than that often leads to decision paralysis and inconsistent use.
