We ranked 30 genres by how much of the work today's AI tooling can actually do — from visual novels at 1.80 to battle royale at 4.17.
The real question isn't 'can AI make a game' — it's 'which game'
Ask whether AI can build a game today and you get a useless yes-or-no fight. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on the genre, and the gap between genres is enormous. So instead of arguing, we scored thirty of them. For our AI Game-Buildability Radar we broke a game down into roughly forty-five distinct ingredients — backgrounds, dialogue, combat, netcode, and so on — gave each an editorial difficulty rating from 1 to 5 for how much current AI tooling can do, and rolled those up into a single buildability score per genre. The lower the score, the more of the work AI can carry today.
One thing to be clear about up front: this is our judgement of what the tooling can do, not a measurement of anything, and it rates automatability, not quality. A 1.80 genre is not an easy genre to make a good game in; it is a genre where AI can plausibly produce most of the parts. Buildable is not the same as good. With that caveat in place, the spread is striking. The easiest genre on the board, the visual novel, scores 1.80. The hardest, battle royale, scores 4.17 — more than twice as resistant by our model.
That spread isn't random, and it isn't about how 'simple' a genre looks. It tracks one thing almost perfectly: what a genre is mostly made of. Genres built out of content fall toward AI; genres built out of feel and live infrastructure hold the line. The rest of this piece walks the ranking, the four bands it sorts into, and what that means if you are deciding where to actually point an AI-assisted pipeline.
The four bands, from AI-buildable to expert-only
We sort the thirty genres into four bands by score. AI-buildable sits under 2.4: here AI can plausibly carry most of the production. It holds visual novels (1.80), interactive fiction (1.83), point-and-click (1.94), hidden object (2.07), clicker and idle games (2.23), and farming sim (2.38). What these share is obvious once you look — they are content genres. Their value lives in writing, 2D art, and light systems, and those are exactly the kitchens our model rates most automatable.
AI-assisted runs 2.4 to 3.0 — AI does a lot, but a human has to own the structure. This band includes walking simulators (2.59), card games (2.62), JRPGs (2.77), management and colony sims, the 2D platformer (2.91), and match-3 (2.93). Systems-craft, 3.0 to 3.6, is where the design work starts to dominate: tower defence, metroidvania, city builder, horror, puzzle, deckbuilding, roguelike, and survival all live here. The parts are buildable; arranging them into something that holds together is the job, and that job resists automation.
Expert-only is everything above 3.6, where the genre's core is precisely the thing AI cannot do yet. Action RPG (3.61), racing (3.73), MOBA, immersive sim, souls-like, open world, FPS (3.93), fighting (4.09), and battle royale (4.17) all sit here. Notice these are the genres people think of when they think 'real games' — and that is not a coincidence. They are defined by moment-to-moment feel, by reactive opponents, or by real-time networked authority, which are the hardest crafts on our ledger.
The five kitchens: why some genres are made of cheap ingredients
To understand why a score lands where it does, look at what a genre is built from. We group the forty-five ingredients into five kitchens and average the difficulty of each. Audio is the most automatable kitchen at 2.2 — voice acting is, by our assessment, the single most-automated craft in games today, sitting at a 1. Art comes next at 2.57, then narrative at 2.78. These three kitchens are where text-to-image, AI voice, and language tooling have made the most ground, and any genre dominated by them inherits a low score.
Then the ground gets harder. Code averages 3.0 across the ledger — inventory, menus, procgen, and in-house tools are routine, but core gameplay loops, character controllers, NPC AI, and camera systems are middling, and the genuinely hard items climb from there. Polish and feel is the most resistant kitchen at 3.75, and it is where two of our hard ceilings live. A genre's final score is essentially a weighted shopping list across these five kitchens: load up on audio, art, and narrative and you sink toward AI-buildable; lean on code and polish and you rise toward expert-only.

Why content-bound genres collapse toward AI
Take the visual novel at 1.80. Strip it to its parts and you find 2D backgrounds (which our model rates a 1), illustration, branching dialogue, flavour text, worldbuilding, music, and voice — and almost nothing else. Every one of those ingredients sits in the three most automatable kitchens. There is no combat system to tune, no netcode, no game-feel loop to obsess over. The genre is, almost end to end, a content-production problem, and content production is the part of game-making AI has changed most. So the score collapses.
The same logic explains the rest of the easy band. Interactive fiction (1.83) is text plus light branching. Point-and-click (1.94) and hidden object (2.07) add 2D scenes and simple interaction logic on top. Clicker and idle games (2.23) are mostly a progression curve and UI. Farming sim sits at 2.38 and carries the hottest momentum in our catalogue, with 59% of its titles released since the start of 2023 — though it falls just outside our formal opportunity window on title count. These are not lazy genres; they are genres whose hard problems happen to be the ones tooling now covers.
JRPG is the instructive outlier at 2.77. It wears a heavy-RPG costume, so people assume it is hard, but pull it apart and most of its bulk is content — art, music, writing, and worldbuilding — wrapped around fairly conventional systems. It is, by our model, a content-and-art genre cosplaying as a systems genre, which is why it scores far lower than its reputation suggests. The lesson generalises: judge a genre by its ingredient list, not its vibe.
Why feel and netcode genres don't move
Now the other end. Battle royale tops out at 4.17 because it stacks the two single hardest ingredients we rate, both at the maximum 5: real-time authoritative netcode and game feel. There is no path around either. You cannot prompt your way to a server that arbitrates a hundred players fairly under load, and you cannot prompt your way to gunfeel that lands. The fighting game at 4.09 is the same story minus the netcode but plus frame-perfect balance and animation — its core is exactly the cluster of crafts AI does worst.
There are, by our assessment, four things AI essentially cannot do today, and they are what define the entire expert-only band. Game feel and juice sit at 5. Real-time authoritative netcode sits at 5. Level, puzzle, and encounter design sit at 4 — the act of arranging space and challenge so it teaches and surprises a human. And the 'is it fun?' balance loop sits at 4, because there is no objective function for fun to optimise against. A genre whose value is concentrated in any of these does not get cheaper as the content kitchens improve.
This is why the expert-only band is so stable, and why it overlaps so neatly with the genres people consider prestige work. FPS (3.93), souls-like (3.89), open world (3.89), and immersive sim (3.87) are not hard because they have more assets — many AI-buildable genres have plenty of assets. They are hard because their irreducible core is feel, reactive opposition, or live infrastructure. Improving text-to-image does nothing for any of them. The ceiling is the ceiling.
Where this points a small team or an AI-assisted pipeline
If your goal is to make something good with AI doing as much of the lift as possible, the ranking is a map, not a verdict. We define an opportunity window as genres scoring at or below 2.7, with at least a thousand titles in the catalogue and at least 40% of them released since the start of 2023 — buildable, proven, and growing all at once. Five clear the bar: interactive fiction (1.83), hidden object (2.07), clicker (2.23), walking simulator (2.59), and card game (2.62). These are the places where AI carries the most weight and an audience demonstrably still exists.
The contrarian pick is deckbuilding. It is the fastest-growing genre we track, with 64% of its titles released since 2023, but it scores 3.18 and sits in systems-craft — because its core is balance, the single AI-hardest content work. That combination, highest demand against a hardest-resisting core, is precisely what makes it defensible: the tooling will not commoditise it next year, so a team that genuinely cracks the balance has a moat the easy genres can never have. How to read these numbers honestly
Two honesty rails are worth restating, because they change how you should use this. First, the difficulty scores are our editorial buildability model — our judgement of what current tooling can do, recomputed from an ingredient ledger, not a benchmark or a measurement of any single tool. They will move as tooling moves, and they say nothing about whether the resulting game is worth playing. A 1.80 is an invitation to build cheaply, not a promise that what you build will be good.
Second, the demand figures — the title counts and the share-released-since-2023 momentum — come from the MythicLemon Games Catalogue, our own compiled dataset of roughly 82,000 released games. They are a relative-popularity proxy: how crowded and how fresh a genre is, not how much money it makes. There is no revenue or unit-sales number anywhere in this study, and you should be suspicious of anyone who hands you one. Crowded is not the same as lucrative, just as buildable is not the same as good.
Used with those two caveats in mind, the ranking does one thing well: it tells you where the production cost of a genre is collapsing and where it is holding firm, so you can point your effort — and your AI tooling — at the work that still needs a human. Pick a genre whose hard parts are the ones AI now covers, or pick a hard genre on purpose and own the part it can't. Either is a strategy. Picking blind is not.
